the Man, the Legend, the Brown-Tom
Brown Tom joined Sum 41 in March 2007. He is a Canadian punk legend and founding member of Gob, one of Sum 41’s favorite bands. Along with our kick-drum, Brown Tom may be the smartest member of the Sum 41 team. Here is proof: Brown Tom, what are your 3 favorite albums of all time? Brown Tom: “It's nearly impossible to choose 3 favorite albums. Here's a bunch of albums that I think are great and had a pretty big influence on me as a musician/songwriter. John Lennon-Plastic Ono band David Bowie- Hunky Dory Circle Jerks- Group Sex Jawbreaker- Dear You Elliott Smith- Either/Or Lauryn Hill- The miseducation of Lauryn Hill Guns and Roses- Appetite for Destruction The Zombies- Odessey and Oracle” Brown Tom, what are 2 of your favorite books of all time? Brown Tom: “Some writers that I am into... Charles Bukowski- Everything he wrote was amazing. I'm especially a fan of his short stories. "The most beautiful woman in town" "Tales of ordinary madness" "Hot water music" Jack Kerouac. almost anything that he has written is a great read. "On the Road" "Subterraneans" "Desolation Angels" Dharma Bums" William S Burroughs. One of my favorites is "Interzone", filled with journal entries from the writer. Burroughs is an extremely dark, despicable individual. Somehow this book this book made his seem more endearing. "Love and Rockets" comics. I enjoy all the stories in these compilations from Gilbert, Jaime and Mario Hernandez but I am particularly into the "Locas" stories written by Jaime. The stories are centered around the on and off again relationship between the lesbian Hopey and bi-sexual Maggie, Los Angeles girls in the 80's with a penchant for punk rock. Simply drawn, stories about life, love, rock and roll, sex. What more could you want? Any comic by Daniel Clowes is brilliant. He has written "Eightball" "Ghost world" "Wilson" Another favorite comic artist of mine is Yoshihiro Tatsumi. Although "comic artist" doesn't really do him justice, his stories are some of the most interesting, thought-provoking, darkest writing I've ever read. These books have all been translated into English and are all amazing: "The push man and other stories" "Abandon the old in Tokyo" "A drifting life" "Good-bye" Another favorite writer is Voltaire. My favorite stories are "Candide" "Zadig" and "Micromegas" Written in the 1700's but still relevant and hilarious today.”

5 things Sum 41 thinks about before playing Warped Tour
One: Showering- On Warped Tour, a working shower is a luxury, and that gives me a perfect excuse to stop showering all together. In the non-Warped World, I shower only because society tells me to. Two: Laundry- Laundry is almost non-existent on Warped Tour. Though this may be mute point, I haven’t washed my jeans in over a month and I have a washing machine 10 feet away from me. Three: Food- The last time I tried cooking I ended up with food poisoning, and I was making dry cereal. On Warped Tour, someone else does the cooking for us. Four: The other bands- Besides for listening to other rad bands, we get to drink with other people for once. Five: Playing live- The Warped Tour packs more shows in less days than any other tour, which is why we love to do it. In case you haven’t heard, Sum 41 loves to tour and rock the shit out of places. Most importantly, we will have some new material to play. Ps. Our new album is coming out soon and it rocks. pps. check out sum41.com, myspace.com/sum41, facebook.com/sum41, and twitter.com/sum41 for more updates
Update from Deryck Whibley
Important Update
It’s unfortunate to say but we are forced to postpone some upcoming European Tour dates. Stevo was in a minor accident yesterday and is unable to get on a airplane to fly to Europe to perform. Anyone who knows our band, knows that touring is our life and is the primary reason we play music. We are completely and utterly bummed out and we all wish Stevo a speedy recovery.
We want to sincerely apologize to our fans in the cities we can’t make it to and we promise to return to them in a few months. We will reschedule any dates that we unfortunately had to cancel in Europe asap.
See you all soon.

The Recording Process
Our band loves to play live. We love to play our music in front of people, which is why we sometimes tour for over a year consecutively. This new music is going to be rocking and badass to play in front of everyone. The creative energy is still flowing, and the songs are getting better and more badass. Tom Lord-Alge has breathed new life into the album, and we are all super excited. We wanna make this the best sum 41 album ever. Then tour, tour, and tour some more.
Basically, we cant wait to play this new shit in front of you guys.

Miami lifestyle
We are in Miami right now mixing with the legendary Tom Lord-Alge. We have mixed a couple songs already, and he has totally given the songs a great vibe. Its really cool seeing the music transform and take shape. The record sounds different almost every time i hear it.
Speaking of transforming, I have totally adopted the Miami lifestyle. I've gotten totally buff, sunbath constantly, and wear a gold chain with no shirt. Someone on the street mistook me for a young Hulk Hogan.
Check out our tour dates, we are adding more shows almost everyday. And get ready to be bombarded with more blogs, videos, and tweets. No doubt you will get sick of our personalities, but at least your gonna have some new, badass Sum 41 music to listen to.

EUROPEAN TOUR HIGHLIGHT VIDEO / APRIL 2010
European in Your Pants: We’re Back
Our short European tour was the perfect way to kick-start this new album cycle. From our sold out dates in Italy, Germany, and Luxembourg, to playing for 20,000+ fans in Belgium, it was the ultimate refresher course in the School of Rock.
We are now on a short break while Deryck finishes up vocals on the album. Then it’s back for European in Your Pants Part Duex and straight into the Vans Warped Tour. Everyone is totally stoked about the albums new sound, and we can’t wait for you guys to hear it.
I can’t give many details on the album or Deryck will kick me out of the band, but I can tell you it’s bigger, darker, and more aggressive than anything we have ever done. It’s definitely my favorite Sum 41 album, and it will be released this summer.

European In Your Pants tour update 4

'like a fine wine, sum41 gets better with age' said a woman named Valveeda after our headlining show in in Munich. She was missing two front teeth, had a wooden leg, and promised to 'show us the goods' for 20 Euros.
As i watched my bandmates do soundcheck while I had a much deserved pedicure, I realized I couldn't agree more. We have been doing this for 14 years now and our live show is damn good.
We just finished playing Vienna and Germany, next we play Luxembourg. I heard a member of the Lux royal family plans to attend. Though my source on this information was Valveeda, so don't quote me.

European In Your Pants tour update 3

So far, this short tour has been badass. We haven't been to Europe in a few years, and the crowds have been really into the show. Like Bob Dylan said, 'at times in my life, the only place I have been happy is when I am on stage.' Actually, that sounded kinda sad. We are pretty happy dudes most of the time, but touring is like natures prozac for us.

We had a day off in Vienna. We walked around, grabbed some food and drank some great Austrian wine. Sometimes, we rarely get to see much of the cities we play. Zurich to Vienna was a long drive. The bad news is, there's nothing to do on the bus.
The good news is, there is always plenty of booze around.
In the afternoon Deryck had some phone interviews to do, so we snuck up to the roof of our hotel, brought some booze, and did them up there. As usual, we got in trouble. Sum 41 rarely gets allowed to return to the same hotel.

STUDIO UPDATE 33
European In Your Pants tour update 2
We almost missed our show last night in Italy, but the Rock Gods beat out the Volcano Gods, and got us there somehow. Here are a few highlights of our 33 hour trip from LA to Milan:
- Leaving the US, our plane stops mid take-off to avoid being landed on by another 747. It results in us being stuck on the tarmac for two hours.
- We are deemed 'too drunk' by the italian flight crew on our flight to Rome and they stop serving us alcohol, so we begin bribing other passengers to get us wine. The crew then stops serving the entire plane alcohol. Needless to say, if we did have any Sum 41 fans on the flight, they now hate us.
- We land in Rome, only to discover all the flights, trains, and buses to Milan are completely booked out, so we drown our sorrows in Italian wine and Jack while our tour manager calls to cancel the show
- Drunkily, someone gets the idea to buy a train ticket to somewhere else, and board the train to Milan anyways. Thus, with baggage in hand, Sum 41 enters a sold out train with no tickets. Naturally, we went to the first class section because it had an open bar.
- The 4 hour train ride is a little hazy, but it consisted of sleeping in hallways, arguing with Italian police, and more Italian wine. Moments before we get arrested, we arrive in Milan and jump off the train.
- We arrive to the venue with 10 minutes to spare, and rocked the shit out of that pizza parlor.

European In Your Pants tour update
The bad news, today we have a 14 hour flight to Italy. The good news, the jet has booze (Deryck made us call ahead and check). Most of us hate flying so we try to get as inebriated as possible-- all the while trying to avoid entering the bathroom with Brown Tom and joining his infamous mile high club.
First show is at the Alcatraz in Milan. I can't remember if we've ever played there, but I can only assume it doubles as a pizza parlor and illegal casino. On a more serious note, it feels good to be on the road again. Playing live is what we do best. Check out twitter.com/sum41 for more constant, inane, and mildly humorous road updates.

Deryck's 30th Bday!
Stevo's AP Blog from SXSW
DAY 2 -I don't know why, but for some reason, I thought this was the best way to start off the day yesterday:
I am truly terrified to see how it comes out the other end.
After that calorie bomb, Cone [Jason McCaslin, bass] and I hit the hotel gym to try and clear up any clogged arteries. I'm listening to Metallica and I can only imagine that Cone is rocking out to the new Justin Bieber record. I hear it's awesome.
Deryck [Whibley, vocals/guitar] and I went out and did some interviews after. The first one was with Delta Airlines. They were really cool, but charged us for drinks and wouldn't give Deryck a pillow (the one with the "D" in the background as per Airline policy). I don't know what I'm saying in that photo, but I'm sure it was profound shit.
The next interview was with Best Buy, and it was pretty awesome because they gave us Vodka (which I'm sure has something to do with why this blog is a day late).
Afterwards, we hit 6th Street and I got my first taste of SXSW. I got to meet the devil. I love his work.
Don't mess with... Canada? (That doesn't really have the same ring to it.)
We even got to help GWAR promote their show.
The show we played at Maggie Mae's was badass. I don't have any pictures because I was busy rockin'. But if Metallica, Iron Maiden and AC/DC had a baby, it would be about as wicked as our performance last night.

Stevo's AP Blog from SXSW
"We're very excited to be here for SXSW! This is our first time playing and we're looking forward to getting drunk and stumbling around the streets of this fine capitol city. An inebriated friend of ours has already fallen down and sprained her right boob, so it sounds like the festival is off to a great start.
Friday we're playing at Maggie Mae's around midnight. We just got back to the hotel from rehearsing at the Music Lab here in Austin. I didn't really focus on practicing any songs but spent most of the time working on kickass "rock faces" for tomorrow's show. This one is sure to create a hurricane of brassieres raining down onto the stage:

A New Years Message From Cone
Well, its a new decade now. Hard to believe our first EP "Half Hour Of Power" came out a decade ago in 2000. It really does seem like yesterday that we were 4 twenty year olds hoping in a van and leaving our small suburb home town of Ajax to go out and tour endlessly to get our band noticed and heard. I am turning 30 this year and I'm still just as excited about this band and the new music we are making as I was back then. Things are changing and evolving and its a pretty exciting time. The last 10 years have been some of the best times of my life. If I think back over the last 10 years, some pretty crazy shit happened in this band and in the world. I'm sure you all know the things I'm talking about. I could list tons of things off the top of my head but I'll spare you that. I want to thank all you fans, the ones that were around from the beginning and the new ones that we have just made for the support over the past decade. We are going to keep on going as long as people are still listening and want more new Sum 41. This band started in 1996 and we are still having a great time making music and touring together. I hope I can write another note like this to you all in 2020! I'm going to go now and I just want to say we will see you all soon. The new album will out this year and the touring monster of Sum 41 will be back on the road and playing for all of you. Thats all. Till then......................
